Semiconductor business at Sony began in 1954 with the commercialization of Japan’s first transistor. Since then, we have continued to contribute in original Sony product development and market creation. In image sensors, Sony commercialized the world’s first CCD color camera in 1980 and many other successful products over the years. Micro-electro-mechanical systems, or MEMS, are silicon-based devices that can serve as sensors, actuators, or passive mechanical structures (such as microfluidic channels). MEMS are manufactured on silicon or glass wafers using techniques originally developed by the semiconductor industry for forming micron-scale features.

As a result, MEMS are tiny, low cost, and low power compared to traditional electro-mechanical devices made by conventional machining. MEMS can easily be integrated with microprocessors, wireless telemetry and other circuitry, enabling powerful capabilities in packages only millimeters on a side. MEMS devices are already in widespread use in smartphones, automobiles, and consumer electronics. The uses for MEMS devices are limited only by a product designer's imagination. PROGRAMMABLE INTERCONNECT

Inference and eFPGA are both data flow architectures. A single inference layer can take over a billion multiply-accumulates. Our Reconfigurable Tensor Processor reconfigures the 64 TPUs and RAM resources to efficiently implement a layer with a full bandwidth, dedicated data path, like an ASIC; then repeats this layer by layer. Flex Logix utilizes a new breakthrough interconnect architecture: less than half the silicon area of traditional mesh interconnect, fewer metal layers, higher utilization and higher performance. The ISSCC 2014 paper detailing this technology won the ISSCC Lewis Winner Award for Outstanding Paper. The interconnect continues to be improved resulting in new patents.

SUPERIOR SCALABILITY

We can easily scale up our Inference and eFPGA architectures to deliver compute capacity of any size. Flex Logix does this using a patented tiling architecture with interconnects at the edge of the tiles that automatically form a larger array of any size.

TIGHTLY COUPLED SRAM AND COMPUTE

SRAM closely couples with our compute tiles using another patented interconnect. Inference efficiency is achieved by closely coupling local SRAM with compute which is 100x more energy efficient than DRAM bandwidth. This interconnect is also useful for many eFPGA applications.

DYNAMIC TENSOR PROCESSOR

Our dynamic tensor processor features 64 one-dimensional tensor processors closely coupled with SRAM. The tensor processors are dynamically reconfigurable during runtime, using our proprietary interconnect, thus enabling implementation of multi-dimensional tensor operations as required for each layer of a neural network model, resulting in high utilization and high throughput.SOFTWAREUnlike solutions designed around AI model development and training, our Inference accelerator starts with a trained ML model, typically in ONNX format and generates a program that runs on our InferX accelerators.

THE INDUSTRY'S FIRST GPNPU

Artificial Intelligence (AI) enhances the functionality of devices used in many applications – autonomous vehicles, industrial robots, remote controls, game consoles, smartphones, and more. Machine Learning (ML) is a subset of the broader category of AI. By using ML models, which are trained by sifting through enormous amounts of historical data to discover patterns, devices can perform amazing tasks without being explicitly programmed.

ML models are created using known labeled datasets (training phase) and are subsequently used to make predictions when presented with new, unknown data in a live deployment scenario (inference). Because an enormous amount of computing resources are required both for training and inference, an ML accelerator is now vital in handling computational workloads.

For most high-volume consumer products, chips are designed with tight cost, power, and size limitations. This is the market Quadric serves with innovative semiconductor intellectual property (IP) building blocks. Our ML-optimized Chimera processors allow companies to rapidly build leading-edge SoCs and more easily write application code for those chips.

After proving the innovative Chimera architecture in 2021 by producing a test chip, Quadric introduced its first licensable IP product – the industry’s first GPNPU (general purpose Neural Processing Unit) in November of 2022, and began product deliveries in Q1 2023.

CANADA’S ONLY INCUBATOR OF HARDWARE AND SILICON-FOCUSED SOLUTIONS

HCI is a 12 to 24 month program dedicated to supporting both silicon and hardware companies as they scale their companies to compete globally. Funded in part by the Government of Canada through the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario, this is a free competitive program and you don’t give up any equity to participate. It is built to support hardware tech startups beyond capital investment.

WHAT IS THE HCI?

ventureLAB’s HCI program is designed specifically for startups building solutions for technologies like AI, IoT, wearable computing, 5G, and other transformative technologies. The HCI program helps you navigate the hardware entrepreneurial ecosystem through access to a state-of-the-art hardware lab, deep tech expertise, investors, manufacturers, and supply chains so you can develop the strategy, network, and tools for growth. Unlike other incubators, this program is specifically built for the unique challenges that hardware companies face. Ten silicon and hardware founders will be selected to join our 2021 cohort and benefit from our strength in deep tech expertise.

WHY HCI?

Building a thriving hardware company is complex. You need a playbook specific to hardware companies to get a product ready for release and overcome the challenges unique to hardware companies, from longer lead times to higher cost to entry.
